AI Moon Landing: Are We There Yet? Exploring the Journey Toward Human-Level Intelligence

By WOM

SUMMARY

  • The quest for artificial general intelligence (AGI) continues, with AI still far from human-level capabilities
  • Google-parent Alphabet merges DeepMind with Google Brain to compete in the ever-evolving AI landscape
  • Tech leaders, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, call for a temporary ban on advanced AI development

Far out, dude! Despite some gnarly progress in artificial intelligence, we're not quite ready to kick it with human-level AI just yet. At least, that's what Humayun Sheikh, an early investor in the rockin' research lab DeepMind, believes. He compares the current state of AI to being on the way to the moon but not quite landing yet.

These large language models (LLM), like the ones developed by OpenAI, are pretty rad, but they're still lightyears away from the ultimate AI dream: artificial general intelligence (AGI). AGI is like the holy grail of AI, man—a hypothetical system that can handle any task just as well as a human.

Humayun, who's now the co-founder of Fetch.ai, likens the current AI landscape to the early days of the internet: "Google is not born yet, but Yahoo is." Despite their limitations, these AI systems are still in their infancy and have tons of potential.

Google's parent company, Alphabet, is merging DeepMind with Google Brain to keep up with the AI race against Microsoft and other tech giants. They're all trying to unlock the mind-blowing potential of AI, from generating creative content to helping kids with their homework. But some experts, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, are raising concerns about the risks of super sophisticated AI and calling for a temporary ban on its development.
