SUMMARY

  • Fortune 500 giant, Caterpillar Inc., relocates global HQ to Irving, Texas
  • Texas now boasts 54 Fortune 500 corporate headquarters
  • Irving claims highest concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters per capita in the US

Picture this: Caterpillar Inc., the maker of those iconic yellow heavy-duty machines, has rolled into Irving, Texas, bringing its global headquarters and a whole lotta buzz. This Fortune 500 company, known for dominating the construction and industrial equipment scene, made the big move from Deerfield, Illinois in 2022, joining the North Texas corporate party.

Caterpillar's CEO, Jim Umpleby, knew that relocating to their existing divisional office in the Towers at Williams Square was a strategic power move. And he wasn't wrong! With about 240 employees gradually migrating from Deerfield, Caterpillar now rubs shoulders with 10 other Fortune 500 companies in Irving, making it the city with the highest concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters per capita in the US. Talk about impressive!

But this relocation wasn't all sunshine and rainbows – it struck a nerve with Illinois, Caterpillar's home for nearly a century. While Texas Governor Greg Abbott cheered the move, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker couldn't hide his disappointment. Still, Caterpillar remains committed to its 17,400 employees in Illinois.

With $59.4 billion in sales and revenues in 2022, Caterpillar leads the world in construction and mining equipment, as well as other heavy-duty products. The company operates globally through three main segments and employs around 109,000 people, all while maintaining a network of over 150 Cat dealers in 192 countries.

Before the big move, Caterpillar already had deep roots in Texas. With over 1,000 employees in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and about 5,600 throughout the state, the company was no stranger to the Lone Star State's thriving business landscape. Now, with its global headquarters in Irving, Caterpillar is ready to solidify its place as a Texas powerhouse.
