China and the Philippines have announced plans to resume oil and gas talks and manage maritime issues "cordially", according to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The move follows a three-day visit to Beijing by Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, during which the two countries signed 14 bilateral agreements on topics including agriculture, infrastructure, development cooperation, and tourism.

In a statement, the Philippines' presidential office said that the two countries had also discussed "what we can do to move forward, to avoid any possible mistakes, misunderstandings that could trigger a bigger problem than what we already have."

Previously, the Philippines had raised concerns over reported Chinese construction activities and the "swarming" of Beijing's vessels in disputed waters of the South China Sea, which is rich in oil, gas, and fish, and through which approximately $3 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually.

In addition to discussing oil and gas exploration in non-disputed areas of the South China Sea, China also promised to cooperate with the Philippines on solar and wind energy and increase imports of fishery products.

President Xi also offered wide cooperation with the Philippines, including support for Chinese investment, assistance in developing villages and agricultural technology, and aid in basic education, meteorology and space, and vaccine development.

The talks come after previous tensions between the two countries over Beijing's territorial claims and reported construction activities in the disputed waters of the South China Sea.

While the Philippines is a defense ally of the United States, under previous leader Rodrigo Duterte it set aside a territorial spat over the South China Sea in exchange for Chinese investment.
