Summary

  • Netflix will live-stream the SAG Awards, expanding into live programming and solidifying Hollywood presence
  • SAG Awards will be first live streaming in 2024, previously aired on cable television
  • Netflix plans to stand out by airing live events but avoiding expensive sports.

As part of a new multi-year partnership, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards will be streamed globally on Netflix beginning in 2024. This marks the first time the awards show, which honors the best performances in film and television and is voted on by the guild's 120,000+ members, will be streamed live. The SAG Awards were previously aired on cable television network TNT, which is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

This move by Netflix represents a further expansion into live programming and solidifies the streaming giant's influence in Hollywood. Netflix's Head of Global TV, Bela Bajaria, stated that “the SAG Awards are beloved by the creative community and viewers alike, and now even more fans around the world will be able to celebrate these talented actors”. Netflix is not the first awards show to make the move from traditional TV to streaming, as the Academy of Country Music Awards switched to Amazon's Prime Video in 2022.

Netflix has been exploring the idea of airing live events on the platform, such as their upcoming Chris Rock standup special set to air on March 4th. This could potentially help the company to stand out against its competitors and attract more subscribers. However, Netflix has so far avoided certain live events, such as sports, due to their high acquisition costs.
