No longer does the 'X' beacon blaze atop San Francisco's skyline.

The brilliant "X", which once illuminated the roof of the San Francisco headquarters of the company previously known as Twitter, has been taken down. Several news sources have shed light on the fact that the sign was dismantled this Monday, following an influx of neighborhood objections.

CNBC reports that the San Francisco Department of Building Inspections was flooded with 24 complaints, with concerns ranging from the sign being a public annoyance to potentially posing a safety hazard. Patrick Hannan, the spokesperson for the SFDBI, conveyed to the media that the landmark had been observed being taken apart that very morning.

The building's owner is now expected to foot the bill for the unsanctioned installation of the now-vanished structure. The fees incurred will cover not only the setting up and tearing down of the sign but also the cost of the inspections and investigations carried out by the city's Building and Planning Departments. The building was flagged for violation on July 29, having been charged with unpermitted construction and safety risks. Despite repeated attempts, officials were denied access to inspect the steel edifice.

Over the weekend, X's figurehead, Elon Musk, took a stance on the challenges facing the company in San Francisco. Amidst the rising tumult, he made it clear that X would not be abandoning its headquarters in the city. In the face of mounting pressures for X to uproot its HQ, Musk, to the contrary, professed his enduring loyalty to the city. San Francisco, he stated, will always have a steadfast friend in X.
