SUMMARY

  • ReFuelEU Aviation proposal aims to cut emissions and boost sustainable aviation fuel usage
  • Fuel suppliers to provide increasing share of SAF at EU airports, starting at 2% in 2025
  • Airline operators must avoid "tankering" and airports must be ready for SAF distribution

Dude, the European Union is on a mission to give air travel a major eco-friendly makeover! They've been burning the midnight oil and have finally come up with the ReFuelEU Aviation proposal, which is gonna help our skies become greener, one flight at a time.

So, what's the deal? Well, the EU Parliament and Council have shaken hands on an agreement that's gonna make sure we're using sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) at EU airports. Starting in 2025, at least 2% of the overall fuel supplied must be SAF, then by 2030, it's gonna be 6%, and by 2050, we're talking 70%! How rad is that?

But it's not just about fuel suppliers, man. Airline operators are gonna have to ditch the bad habit of "tankering," where they carry extra fuel to avoid refueling with SAF. And airports? They've gotta make sure they're ready to rock and roll with the new eco-friendly fuel.

EU officials are calling this a "turning point," and Frans Timmermans, the bigwig for the European Green Deal, said, "The EU is ready for take-off towards a more sustainable future for aviation." Right on!

Still, there's a lot to be done to keep our planet's temperature from rising too much. But hey, every little step counts, and the EU's green aviation plan is definitely a step in the right direction!
