Stampocalypse: The Rising Cost of Snail Mail in 2023

By WOM

April 26, 2023

SUMMARY

  • Forever stamps set to increase from 63 to 66 cents in July 2023
  • Price hike necessary to offset inflation and work towards USPS self-sufficiency
  • Forever stamps remain valid for postage regardless of purchase price or date

Hey there, get ready for a wild ride! The cost of mailing your favorite snail mail, greeting cards, or bill payments is on the rise, yet again.

Just a short while ago, the U.S. Postal Service increased the cost of a Forever stamp to 63 cents, and now they're announcing plans to bump it up to 66 cents this July.

These price hikes are all part of a 5.4% increase approved by the Governors of the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Regulatory Commission still needs to give it the green light, but the USPS says it's all necessary to keep up with inflation.

Last year, when stamps were a mere 58 cents, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy warned that prices would have to keep rising "at an uncomfortable rate" until the Postal Service becomes self-sufficient.

So, what's the scoop on the new rates? First-Class Mail Forever stamps will jump from 63 cents to 66 cents. The price hike will go into effect on Sunday, July 9, 2023. But don't worry, your Forever stamps will still be good for postage, no matter when you bought them.
