SUMMARY

  • Second weekend triumph with $87 million!
  • Record-breaking video game adaptation.
  • The movie is set to cross $1 billion globally.

Dude, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is absolutely crushing it at the box office, raking in a whopping $87 million in its second weekend alone. No other animated film has ever scored such an epic win in its second round. So far, this rad video game adaptation has pulled in a massive $347.8 million in North America and a mind-blowing $678 million globally.

Meanwhile, "Renfield," Universal's zany horror-comedy featuring Nicolas Cage as Count Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his rebellious henchman, came in at a disappointing fourth place with a mere $7.7 million from 3,375 locations. It seems the film's not living up to its hype, especially considering its $65 million production cost and millions more spent on marketing. On the other hand, "The Pope's Exorcist" fared a bit better, landing in second place with $9.1 million.

However, it's all about "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" right now, as it's looking to be the first movie of 2023 to cross the coveted $1 billion mark globally. After just two weekends, it's already the highest-grossing film of the year, leaving "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" ($474 million) in the dust. Mario and the gang have also set a new record as the biggest video game adaptation in history, toppling 2016's "Warcraft" ($439 million) and "Pokémon: Detective Pikachu" ($449 million).

Meanwhile, "John Wick 4" is holding steady at third place, racking up $7.925 million in its fourth weekend. The Keanu Reeves-led action sequel has grossed a respectable $160.1 million in North America and $349 million globally, officially becoming the highest earner of the franchise. Ben Affleck's sports drama "Air" rounds out the top five with $7.7 million from 3,507 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $33.28 million.

In other box office news, Crunchyroll's coming-of-age anime adventure "Suzume" opened to a modest $5 million from 2,170 theaters, falling short of other recent anime hits from the company. However, "Suzume" has received rave reviews and already done huge business in Asia, where it's become a massive hit with $104 million in Japan alone.
