In an extravagant demonstration of royal pageantry, the final goodbye to the United Kingdom's longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, cost the British Treasury approximately £162 million ($201.4 million), as disclosed on Thursday.

Queen Elizabeth II, the embodiment of British tradition and history, breathed her last on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96 in her Scottish estate, Balmoral Castle. Her demise propelled the nation into a 10-day period of nationwide mourning. Despite the overall functioning of workplaces and businesses, a sizeable number of events got cancelled, all as a preamble to her stately funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 18.

A staggering 250,000 citizens had the opportunity to pay their last respects as the Queen laid in state in London during the days of mourning. Some stood for over 24 hours in serpentine queues across London's thoroughfares to bid adieu to their beloved Queen.

The final resting place for the Queen is the sacred St. George’s Chapel within Windsor Castle, Berkshire, where she was interred. The financial breakdown released recently revealed that the hefty costs incurred by the government departments included £73.68 million to the Home Office, £57.42 million to the Department for Culture, Media & Sport, among others.

While Scotland's government spent £18.756 million for the Queen's slow hearse procession and a day of lying in state, the UK Treasury refunded this sum. Queen Elizabeth II's son, now known as King Charles III, was crowned on May 6, during a splendid three-day weekend of coronation revelries, the budget for which is estimated to fall between £50 million and £100 million.
