North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, recently expressed his unequivocal support for Russia's Vladimir Putin. This mutual appreciation club convened at Russia's premier spaceport, the Vostochny Cosmodrome. The choice of location hints that Kim might be looking to tap into Russia's satellite tech know-how, possibly to enhance North Korea's military surveillance capabilities. Their past efforts in this arena haven't been particularly successful.
While Putin's wish list could include North Korea's old-school ammunition and rockets, an interesting twist considering historical events. Back in the Korean War era, it was Moscow providing weaponry to North Korea. Times and geopolitical alliances certainly do change. At this meet-up, Putin reminisced about the USSR's support for North Korea, noting that their dialogue would encompass various sectors, including the economic and humanitarian landscape of the region.
As Putin and Kim caught up, there's buzz in the intelligence community that North Korea might have Soviet-style artillery and rockets that could be valuable to Russia, especially given its ongoing involvement in Ukraine. Such a deal, however, would poke a big hole in the international sanctions, previously endorsed by Russia.
While this friendship might seem beneficial for both parties on the surface, it draws Russia further into international isolation, given the heightened sanctions post their Ukraine invasion. Yet, for North Korea, there's a silver lining. Experts speculate that they might receive food and missile tech gifts from their Russian comrades.
This summit, however, wasn't all politics. As they toured a rocket launch facility, Kim displayed a curious mind, barraging a Russian official with questions about space. The mutual admiration was palpable, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of their strengthened bond.
