In a period of just four and a half months, Jack Smith, the special counsel, has directed over $5.4 million of funds into two high-profile investigations involving former President Donald Trump, as stated by the Department of Justice on Friday.
The lion's share of this budget, almost $4.6 million, was allocated to employee remuneration and various contractual services, such as IT support and investigative backing, as outlined in a report publicized by the DOJ. Other areas of expenditure included travel costs, rent, office supplies, printing, and the procurement of equipment. This report provides a breakdown of spending from November 18th through the end of March.
Appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, Smith took the helm of two criminal investigations in mid-November. The first investigation dealt with the accusations surrounding Trump's alleged misuse of confidential information post-presidency, which led to an unparalleled federal criminal case against him. Trump has denied the 37 charges levied against him, including deliberate withholding of national defense information and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
The second investigation under Smith's leadership, which scrutinizes potential illicit attempts to disrupt the power transfer to President Joe Biden post the 2020 election, is still in progress.
On the same day, the DOJ also unveiled the expenditure reports for two other special counsels, Robert Hur and John Durham. Hur, assigned with probing classified documents found at Biden's premises, spent around $615,962 within approximately three and a half months. Meanwhile, Durham, appointed to investigate the DOJ's inquiry into Trump's 2016 campaign, exhausted over $1.1 million from last October to March end, amounting to a total of $7.7 million over five expenditure reports since his appointment in October 2020.
