After a seven-year hiatus from India, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a triumphant return in April. His voyage brought him to the bustling cities of New Delhi and Mumbai, each housing one of the two newly inaugurated Apple flagship stores.
Apple's senior analyst, Angelo Zino, attributes Cook's in-person presence at the store launches to the promising economic landscape India presents. He emphasized, "The potential in India mirrors that of China. We view them both as extremely potent markets, holding tremendous prospects."
Initiating its Indian journey in 2017 with the production of older iPhone models, Apple elevated its commitment in 2022, moving the manufacturing of its iPhone 14 to India. This strategic shift was a significant milestone, accounting for 3.5% of global iPhone production. Apple's lofty ambition doesn't stop there; the tech giant eyes manufacturing a quarter of the world's iPhones in India.
The trigger behind Apple's diversification, according to Harvard Business School's Management Practice Professor Willy Shih, was the vulnerability exposed during China's disruptive Covid zero policy. Without a diverse supply chain, Apple encountered production deficiencies that adversely impacted their sales figures.
However, shifting iPhone production from China to India, while promising, is not devoid of complications. Challenges such as sourcing qualified personnel, developing robust infrastructure, and navigating through a maze of regulations are considerable hurdles. Apple, when contacted for a comment, refrained from responding.
